Syllabus
Math: The 4th graders will be learning math concepts involving problem solving skills, measurement, data and probability, algebraic thinking, numbers and operations, and geometry. If math comes easy to your student, they will be challenged with enrichment problems. Students will need to have a strong understanding and recall of multiplication facts this year (0-12). Please work on these throughout the year. Students will be assessed on daily work, participation, and tests.
Spelling: Weekly unit words will be given on Mondays. The list will also be posted on our web page. Each unit will cover a specific phonetic structure as well as other vocabulary skills. We will work on workbook pages (practice packets) as well as other study tools throughout the week. Test will generally be given on Fridays. Practice packets are also due on Friday and will be assessed as part of the spelling grade.
Bible: Our focus will be on the kings of Israel and Judah. We will identify how God cared for His people through the judges and eventually the kings. We will strive to recognize biblical principles and apply them to our lives. Students will be assigned memory work each week. We will have either an oral or fill-in-the-blank quiz on Fridays. Evaluation will be based on participation, assignments, memory verses, unit tests, and projects.
Language Arts: This year we will be learning a wide variety of skills in reading, grammar, and writing. Students will be assigned a range of writing projects throughout the year. In reading we will learn an assortment of strategies to sharpen our comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, and accuracy skills. We will be using a Daily 5 model as well as studying classic literature excerpts, a book study of Medallion, and listening to class novels. Students will be expected to read for at least 20 minutes every night, we will read for at least 20 minutes every day in class as well. In April we plan on celebrating Poetry month. The 4th graders will also be working toward the 40 Book Challenge! Evaluation will be based on daily participation, projects, and assessments.
Social Studies: We will be learning about the regions of the United States. The 4th graders will be expected to know the states and capitals as we learn about each region. There will be a test over all 50 states after we have covered each region. We will also do a state project toward the end of the year. Students will be assessed through projects, participation, and tests. (Mrs. Mickelson will be teaching both sections of Social Studies)
Science: In science we will cover Earth Science, Life Science, and Physical Science as well as technology. We will grow in our knowledge of God though the study of His creation. We will work on labs, presentations, and special projects that may require time put in at home. Students will be evaluated though projects, note taking, quizzes, tests, and class participation.
Handwriting: Cursive is required for all subjects in fourth grade. We will review position of body and paper, proper spacing of words and letters, and formation of both upper and lowercase letters.
