This week we worked on fluency and expression through performing reader's theaters. They did a wonderful job!

Today the second graders heard that the LEGO company was having 'problems' thinking of new LEGO set designs. We decided to use what we have learned in science about solving problems to help them out. Each student made a plan based on what they know about LEGOs and with the knowledge that they would only get to use up to 50 LEGOs. We built models of our designs and drew conclusions to see if we were successful! Check out our hard work!
In writing, we have been talking about transition words. To go along with our "How to grow a plant" writing, we made flowers. The second graders learned a little about the colors on a color wheel and then tried to create a color wheel with the petals!
This morning we worked on using different voices when we read to help what the character is saying to stand out. We listened to Skippyjon Jones Class Act being read by its author Judy Schachner and then practiced our expressive reading with a partner. :)
Last week we learned about artists who made Pop Art famous. We asked our classmates to think of one word that describes us, and then made our own portraits. We only used blue, yellow, and red to paint our pictures. They were SO MUCH FUN!
A few weeks ago we learned the difference between warm and cool colors. For our art project we created these fun hand drawings to show off our new knowledge! “The best thing about the future is that is comes one day at a time.” – Abraham Lincoln May might be a long ways away but many of the second graders are already anticipating its coming. This year the second graders prepared time capsules to be ‘buried’ somewhere in the school. Inside we put information sheets telling about each student at the beginning of the year. Students also brought one special item from home along with a note explaining why it was important to them to put inside the capsule. In May we will open them and see how much we have changed from the beginning of the year! It has been SO MUCH FUN getting to know all the kiddos in 2nd grade this year! They have already shown me that they are excellent writers and very eager to learn all sorts of new things. Check out a few pictures of our first week. :) |
