We put to use our knowledge of the design process this week! Each group make a prototype of a way to protect an egg from cracking when dropped from a certain height. We tested our models on Friday. ALL of the groups were successful!

We have been working on using the scientific process to identify and answer questions. Our most recent lab got us thinking about how to build towers out of common materials. Our challenge was to make the tallest tower possible using just toothpicks, play-dough, and our teammates. They learned a lot about teamwork, changing ideas, flexibility, and perseverance. In the end we also got practice communicating our results by creating bar graphs. As part of this science chapter we have been learning about the scientific process. We set out to answer the question "Which type of boat will hold more bears?". The 4th graders made observations, did some research and formed a hypothesis. Finally, we got to run an experiment and collect some data. The scientists made some excellent observations and formed well thought out conclusions! We spent some time this month learning about different kinds of storms and becoming storm experts! The 2nd graders loved doing research to learn about how the storms form, different storm facts, and watching storm videos. We used the iPads, internet sites, and various books to gather information. It was so fun to see how interested they were in learning about their storms! Last week we did an experiment with a lemon and a peppermint stick. We put the peppermint stick inside of the lemon and then found out what it tasted like together! We learned that the acid from the lemon juice makes little holes in the peppermint stick and we could use it like a straw! We have been working on writing good descriptive paragraphs, so later we wrote about our experiment. We tried to show what happened rather than just tell what went on. We thought it tasted delicious! :) We got a few packets of "Rainbow Crystals" from one of Ms. Cose's students this week. We put the crystals in water and watched them absorb the water and expand into a sort of jelly-like state. Then, we mixed food coloring into the crystals and planted seeds in each bucket. The seeds are supposed to grow in the crystals. We thought it was quite a cool experiment to try and hope we can share positive results with you soon!
