In January, the second graders took a week to become penguin experts. They read books, watched videos, did special projects, and wrote their own fact books. They put to use their knowledge of penguin parenting and became penguin parents for a day. Each second grader brought a "nest" to keep an actual egg in, and were responsible for making sure their egg was with them and protected at all times though out the day. The penguin eggs even got to go to recess. At the end of the day, the eggs hatched and the second graders got to meet their new friends! It was a fantastic week! A few of our penguin projects!

On Friday we had Penguin Parenting day! Each student brought a nest to keep their egg in and could choose to dress as a penguin for the day. We learned that both moms and dads help take care of the chicks. They took their eggs with them everywhere (recess, lunch, pencil sharpening) and had to try to keep them safe and warm. We only had two casualties. :) At the end of the day the eggs 'hatched'! This is the song we taught the 1st graders. :) This week we have been studying penguins. We read lots of non-fiction books about penguins and learned TONS of interesting facts. On Wednesday we did a QR code activity on the iPads. Each code brought us to a different video to tell us facts about penguins or fun songs! It was a great way to do more research!
